50th Reunion Planning
Hi all, On February 4, 2009, we had a meeting to discuss our upcoming 50th reunion. Those in attendance were Joe and Gloria Gliko, Steve Savage, Connie Nicholas, Mike Cereceres, Stan Da Veiga, John Lotz and Pat Anderson. We also had input and suggestions (and others expressing desire for helping with this effort) prior to the meeting from Erik Petersen, Sharon Drago, Nancy Exley, Pam Comstock, Judy Elder Mershon, Alysa Dees Pearson, Tony Belarmino and John Anderson through email or phone. First, I'll give you some background. At our 45th reunion, at the last minute, we were forced to change our event to Connie Nicholas' backyard which just so happened to be the hottest day of the year. However, from that event, a lot of feedback we received which was discussed at our meeting. There was some talk about possibly doing a 3 or 4 day cruise. A lot of the feedback given was very positive about the intimacy of a backyard function such as we had there. The only negativity was it was so hot and there seemed to be some miscommunication and everybody who had signed up didn't get the message about the change in venue. * Cruise - We weighed the pros and cons and decided that without knowing how the economy or our health would be in two years, plus very little intimacy for our group on a big ship, and mainly the cost of a cruise, that idea was given a thumbs down. * Backyard Venue - Judy Elder Mershon offered to host the 50th reunion in her backyard (in Fair Oaks) with a Hawaiian theme. (See discussion below) * Event on Del Paso Blvd - "There has been a giant resurgence on Del Paso Blvd. It would be good if we could support that. TONS of venues ... art and performing arts studios, restaurants and catering all on Del Paso Blvd ! There is actually a non-profit called The Del Paso Blvd. Partnership with over 100 members of non-profits and business owners. The Maakestad's old hardware store is a trendy cafe etc. In particular, there is a place on the 1900 block that is BEAUTIFUL, has an gallery, a small and large theatre and a meeting venue ... also the guy "Matt" who was the head of catering at David Berkeley (the most prestigious caterer in Sacto area) for years, started his own restaurant/catering on Del Paso Blvd about 6 years ago -My son Peter's buddy is the PE teacher at the school that once was Norte. He speaks to me and Pete's father in law (Frank Cemo class of '66) in a hushed voice and with great reverence (AS IT SHOULD BE) of the sports' prowess of Norte's days. It would be cool to AT LEAST arrange a walk through and a photo of all us in front of the school, if not have our reunion in the Amber Room or Boy's Gym. It would be nice for a reunion thing..." (see discussion below)
* Combine classes of 1960, 61 and 62 (see discussion below) We tentatively agreed to keep the prices down for the next one but make it special just the same. This would be accomplished by taking Judy up on her offer. Stan has a cousin in the catering business and since we all want to enjoy the party with little fuss, we decided to get some tentative prices. It was also expressed at our meeting that we would like to have some kind of an event on Del Paso Blvd, such as a walk, stop somewhere for a drink, then move on to maybe Woodlake Park to have picture taken of our whole class. Perhaps there is someone out there that would like to coordinate that portion of it. However, we have several questions that we would like input from the rest of you. In regard to the combining of classes, it was discussed that perhaps since this was our big 5 0, we might not want to share and logistically, how do you celebrate a 50th reunion with folks that might be having their own on their respective years. We would like your response. If your response is positive as far as combining, we will approach others involved in their reunion planning. So we need your input as soon as possible. We also decided that we should plan our event for mid September of 2011. The theme was discussed a little and in the past we've always used the theme that reflected our high school years so the question is, how do you feel about having a Hawaiian theme? There was one suggestion if we used the Hawaiian theme... we could call it Hawaii 5 0 :-) We not only want your opinions and input, we need them. Please respond with your opinions or any other ideas you might have, but please add any pros or cons as you might have thought about something we haven't. We also discussed when we should start a comprehensive search for our classmates. It was decided that it was a little early for that so we will start doing that about a year in advance. As always, please go to the website or write an email to this address to give us any new updates to addresses, emails and phones that you might have. Our next meeting will be mid to late summer to discuss. Your emails will be shared with these folks so make sure you get your ideas in for us and if there is any way you can find time or would like to join us, please don't be shy. Let us know! Hope to hear from you soon....
